Was the first one any good? Never played it. Just at a glance, the atmosphere seems to be similar to the Metro series.

STALKER: Call of Pripyat and Shadow of Chernobyl are some of my favorite games of all time. They've aged somewhat poorly, sure, but the atmosphere and personality the games have are top-notch. The STALKER games are similar to Metro in some ways, yes, but they have much more character and charm to them in my opinion. 

 

On topic of the OP, I'm so on board the hype-train.
