Order returns to Kidal. A sense of order and normalcy has been returned to the Malian city of Kidal. The city was recently a heavily contested battleground between Malian, French and US Forces on one side and the islamic extremists of Boko Haram on the other. Boko Haram was able to secure large parts of the city in a surprise attack following a mutiny in the Malian army. The French and Malian forces present in Kidal were pushed back to the large military base just outside the city or confined in pockets scattered arun the city. A successful counterattack spearheaded by American Special Forces saw much of the city regained, however Boko Haram managed to set off several chemical weapons, initially believed to be Sarin gas, across the city. Decontamination work is expected to be ongoing for at least the coming month. Despite the lingering chemical threat the Mayor of Kidal alongside representatives of the Malian government as well as the French and American military held a large press conference in the city regarding the current status of military operations and their successes against Boko Haram. It was declared that Martial law will be lifted and additional IDAP assets be brought in as soon as French EOD techs have cleared safe passages through the heavily booby trapped parts of the city. The Mayor of Kidal arrives at FOB Botieux under heavy guard. During the press conference the Mayor layed out grand plans for the revitalization of Kidal. French and US forces are expected to remain in the region for an initial stabilization period where these troops will be patrolling the city and eliminating remaining pockets of Boko Haram resistance. Counterattack in Kidal! America on the offensive American military prowess was on full display yesterday as American air and land forces conducted a coordinated offensive against an airfield on the outskirts of the Malian city of Kidal. Locals reported both airstrikes from American attack helicopters as well as significant amounts of small arms fire in what is reported as a storming of the airfield by US Special Forces. These news comes shortly after the announcement of the deployment of US troops alongside additional French reinforcements to the country of Mali following the seizure of Kidal by the ISIS-Affiliated terrorist organisation Boko Haram. Boko Haram managed to seize control of the city following a mutiny by parts of the Malian army. The French troops stationed in and near the city were caught off guard and fighting continues to flare up across the city where pockets of French and Malian forces resist Boko Haram’s advance. Early reports of the battle indicate that a number of airstrikes were launched by American and French attack helicopters from the nearby Franco-Malian military base. This was followed up by a ground assault by alleged American special forces who seized the airfield and the surrounding buildings. Many vehicles carrying terrorists were reportedly destroyed as they tried to intervene. The smoke columns can still be seen from a distance. In a press conference held shortly after the battle died down American, French and Malian military commanders stated that the airfield had been secured and will remain in use by the Malian and French forces in the area to bring in humanitarian supplies and evacuate wounded. They also confirmed a “leak” of hazardous chemicals had taken place during the fighting but that it was contained to the airfield and failed to reach the more populated areas of the city. French and Malian troops take control of the Kidal Aerodrome following the successful US assault. Unconfirmed reports indicate at least 30 terrorists were killed in the fighting along with four still unidentified civilians. The bodies have been turned over to Malian authorities. It remains unclear if these civilians were working with Boko Haram, being held as human shields, or were simply unlucky. ADANews will continue to cover this conflict as it progresses. Burkina Faso sees sharp drop in terrorist activity following US Intervention ADA News - Sept. 11th, 2020 The small african country of Burkina Faso made headlines a few weeks back when rumors started surfacing about a US military intervention against the terrorist organisation Boko Haram. Rumors and unverifiable videos flooded social media claiming to show “western men with advanced military equipment” conducting military operations. Reports of explosions and airstrikes were also reported, especially in the country's lawless Kujari Province. A spokesperson of the Burkinese government stated to ADANews that the country has seen “a sharp drop in terrorist activity” and that the Burkinese Army is working closely with its US allies to restore order to the fractured country. When pressured about the rumors of chemical weapons present in the country he was reluctant to answer and just referred to earlier official government statements. With the US withdrawing part of its forces in Burkina Faso following several successful operations against Boko Haram the door has now opened for private contractors. Much like the infamous Blackwater, these contractors occupy a gray area between soldier and mercenary and have been the subjects of heavy controversy in the past. Bringing these contractors into Burkina Faso following the partial US withdrawal seems to have had a noticable impact however as terrorist activity in the country has continued to drop at a steady rate. Rebels in Burkina Faso pose next to alleged US Helicopter wreck Images of heavily armed rebel fighters posing in front of a wreck alleged to be a US Army MH-60, more commonly known as a “Blackhawk” helicopter, have been making the rounds in the shadier parts of social media the past few days. The picture was first posted on Twitter by a person claiming to be affiliated with the African terrorist organisation Boko Haram, stating that the picture was taken on the 23rd of April. While the wreck in the image resembles the aircraft in question the wreck is too badly damaged to confirm beyond reasonable doubt. The Pentagon has declined to comment on the possibility of American forces being present in Burkina Faso at this time. This image has been circulating among a number of Twitter accounts known to be linked to terrorist organisations in Sub-Saharan Africa. Regardless of the validity of the picture, Burkina Faso remains a wartorn country with the national government retaining little to no control over large areas of the country where various warlords and terrorist organisations flourish. Two helicopters go down over Malden as violence surges Around midnight last night townspeople in Arudy were woken up by a loud noise and a swift power outage, believed to have been the result of a US military helicopter crash landing a short distance outside the town. A spokesperson for the Malden autonomy confirmed that EMS assets were held back on request by the US military while they dealt with the crash. By the time anybody got close the wreckage had been recovered although the terrain showed clear signs of a heavy impact along with a knocked down electrical pole. The crash site outside Arudy. The wreckage was removed during the night by US forces. Power was restored to the entire town by noon and the US military contingent on the island communicated their apologies via the governor's office and financial compensation to the affected residents was forthcoming. While information is sparse, the US military operation is believed to have been a step in the combating of the rampant lawlessness on Malden. The town of Arudy was believed to contain a insurgent weapons cache as well as some high ranking members of the insurgency. The military operation was sanctioned by local authorities. The need to find and destroy these weapons caches was on full display this night as a civilian helicopter conducting an urgent transportation of medical equipment was shot down by a insurgent ground-to-air missile and crashed on a hillside. EMS assets were quickly dispatched to the location and according to reports the 3 people onboard were in critical condition and have been flown to Malta for emergency medical treatment. Surge in violence as Maltese government cracks down on lawless Malden The last few days has seen a significant spike in violence on the small Mediterranean island of Malden. While nominally under maltese rule, Malden has long been neglected by the government in Valletta with the local governor ruling nearly unrestricted. With the collapse of Libya and the following migrant and refugee crisis Malden became a haven for pirates, smugglers and other criminal elements with the Maltese government both unwilling and unable to do much about the deteriorating situation. Following a suggestion from the US government american special forces have reportedly been deployed to Malden although the pentagon was unwilling to disclose any more details than that. Local sources however paint a clearer picture. Reports of suspicious vehicles traveling in convoys, heavily armed and uniformed individuals wearing gas masks, sudden eruptions of heavy gunfire, military style aircrafts flying low and at high speeds followed by explosions have all been circulating in local media. Maltese prime minister Enrico Aldani held a press conference yesterday stating: “My government is taking drastic steps to restore law and order to the autonomous territory of Malden. Together with our American allies we are conducting both law enforcement and combat operations against the bandits, insurgents and terrorists that have been using Malden as a base for their illegal operations in the Mediterranean sea. Furthermore I wish to assure the people of Malden that their autonomy will not be challenged in any way following these operations and we are conducting them fully within the laws of the autonomous territory of Malden.” The above statement has received mixed reception among the population of Malden. While the influx of migrants and the sharp rise in crime the population of Malden are eager to see a return to normalcy. Concerns have been raised however that the government in Valletta, despite statements to the contrary, intends to clamp down on the autonomy Malden has long enjoyed. Uprising in Iran results in Kurdish statehood. Ever since the uprising began in late 2019 following Iran’s bungled response to American military action in the Straits of Hormuz the Ayatollah has struggled to regain control of the Kurdish dominated borderlands with Iraq and Turkey. Multiple attempts to regain control via military force have failed as the Kurdish rebels are firmly entrenched in the westernmost provinces of Iran and hold significant stockpiles of advanced weapons allegedly provided by NATO in an effort to further weaken Iran. Regardless of foreign aid or not the Kurds seem like they are here to stay. A spokesperson from the “Provisional Republic of Kurdistan” has approached Iraqi and US governments with the proposal of uniting Iranian and Iraqi Kurdistan into a coherent Kurdish state. Given the Iraqi Kurds already extensive autonomy the US Government has urged their Iraqi counterparts to accept the proposal resulting in the establishment of the Republic of Kurdistan last week. Kurdish YPG forces in Iranian Kurdistan celebrate a victory over Iranian forces. Bringing together the war-torn territory of the new nation falls initially to president appointee Berewan Romet. In accordance with the Treaty of Mosul establishing Kurdistan he is to rule the country for a period of 2 years as a functional apparatus of state is set up. After this initial period open elections are to be held every 4 years. The status of the Kurdish minorities in Syria and Turkey are expected to become hotly debated topics given Syria's and Turkeys refusal to participate in the Kurdish nationbuilding. For now however Iranian and Iraqi Kurdistan are being united with the Turkish and Syrian Kurds being left out. Some talks about the possibility of a population transfer has been brought up but has yet to manifest in anything substantial. As was expected the Ayatollah in Tehran has condemned this step describing it as "Another American imperialist venture" and "An attempt to utterly dismantle the Islamic Republic of Iran". However with ever growing dissent at home and multiple military setbacks against the Kurds there seems to be very little Iran is capable of doing to prevent this redrawing of the borders in the Middle East.
