  2. Unrest in Chernarus, American Involvement Suspected Soyuz News - October 1st, 2019 Reports of fighting in the Autonomous Oblast of Podagorsk today were confirmed by Soyuz News, as well as a series of sporadic incidents in the eastern region of Chernarus involving the Chernarussian Defense Force. The so-called “Red Guard” is believed to be the source of much of the violence, which is believed to have claimed at least 30 lives in Podagorsk alone. The reports of fighting in the rest of Chernarus are being downplayed by the government in Chernogorsk, with the Konanov government refusing to release any causality figures. Sources within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are also concerned of possible American involvement in the area, along with the fleet of warships the United States has stationed off the Podagorsk coast. The current incarnation of Red Guard, the terrorist organization that is believed to be involved in the fighting, is a far-right ultranationalist group that appears to have little issue with indiscriminate attacks on the civilian population of the region. This is a far-cry from the previous group that operated under the name, which was a socialist resistance movement attempting to restore democracy to the region, before being crushed by CDF and NATO forces in 2016. The sudden appearance and violent nature of this group has led many to question its origins, and whether it has foreign backers. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated they have begun an investigation into this new Red Guard, but the FSB might be ahead of their colleagues at Smolenskaya-Sennaya Square. An unnamed senior source in the FSB has told Soyuz that they have been tracking suspicious movements of American Special Forces in the area, as well as possible CIA agents making contacts with local residents and offering bribes to report disinformation. The same source also said there were concerns about American forces attempting to establish the Red Guard as part of a false-flag operation as an excuse to become more involved in the region. Pictured: Social Media post of smoke rising over Podagorsk after fighting Soyuz News has made repeated attempts to interview officials of the Konanov government to get answers about the current crisis, but each attempt has been flatly rejected. Instead, our reporters met with locals in Podagorsk to uncover what has been occurring. Sharapov Georgiy, a member of the town council of Protvino, told us that shortly after the fighting began, he saw several helicopters flying in the area, one of which he firmly identified as American. “You could hardly miss it,” he said describing the helicopter, “it was the size of a bus!” Sharapov also said he saw it come from the direction of several loud explosions before it continued towards the sea. The true involvement of America in this crisis is not known at this point, but suffice to say it is far more than the simple “investigation” of the attack on their official that the Moore government has been claiming. 6. Under Secretary of State Wounded In Podagorsk Grand Central Times - September 29th 2019 Alexander Rodriguez, the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs, was severely wounded in a roadside bombing today that killed four others, including two Americans who were members of his staff. The Under Secretary and his entourage were in a convoy driving through the Autonomous Oblast of Podagorsk, with an escort of Chernarussian Defense Force vehicles, in an unannounced visit to the region. The Under Secretary had reportedly made this visit in the hopes of assessing the Eastern European Region, following concerns of instability due to recent events. As the convoy was passing the town of Kovrov, an improvised explosive device went off under the lead CDF vehicle and sent the American vehicle careening off the road and into the nearby forest. Two members of the Under Secretary's staff, whom the State Department has not yet named, reportedly died in the crash, while the Under Secretary and another three staff members are in critical condition. The CDF has also reported two dead and another five wounded. Pictured: Under Secretary's car and burning escort near the town of Kovrov The instability within Podagorsk began last month after the death of Governor Pyotr Chigorin, who was widely seen as the unifying figure in the region. Chigorin was the former Chairman of the Podagorski Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, and he led the region through the break-up of the Soviet Union and its shaky transition to democracy. His leadership is viewed by many as the sole reason the region didn’t descend into ethnic fighting in the early 1990’s, with his stewardship leading the country to see economic growth in a time when most Eastern European states were suffering from drastic economic hardships. His decision to align with the then-newly independent state of Chernarus over the Russian Federation was controversial, but deemed necessary to maintain some sense of stability, though he did maintain closer contact with Russia than some in the Chernarussian government reportedly preferred. Due to his popular record, he was elected Governor four consecutive times, with the last one being a mere six months before his fatal heart attack at age 78. However, with his death, the reins of the oblast fell to his successor, Nickolai Ivanovich. Pictured: Kovrov Cemetary in 2016 during the dedication of the Red Hammer Memorial Monument Ivanovich is largely seen as an official appointed to appease those who wished for closer ties with Chernarus, an opinion that is not particularly popular in the largely ethnic Russian region. Early policy ideas from the new governor included an increase in tariffs on Russian goods and more stringent travel restrictions. As a result, protests quickly popped up, including in Berzeniki, which have become increasingly violent in the past two weeks. At least twenty-six were reported killed in days leading up to today’s attack, with several of them being police and CDF troops. Due to the severity of these protest and the recent bombing, some have begun to speculate that the instability is the result of a resurgent Red Guard, an ultra-nationalist terrorist group that was heavily involved in the 2015 fight for Chernarus and Podagorsk. There is however no solid evidence of this group making a return, particularly after their leader Gleb Zakharovich was killed during the "Second Battle of Berezhino" in early 2016. While no group has claimed credit for the bombing against the Under Secretary, many observers of the region have been quick to point the finger at the Red Guard, regardless of the available facts, due to the historic lack of other major terrorist organizations in the region. 8. Boko Haram On The Retreat In Nigeria ADA News - Dateline September 15th, 2019 For the first time in over a year, Nigeria has gone a month without a terrorist attack on any of its major cities. This milestone, while not a decisive defeat of Boko Haram in the region, is part of a series of victories the government has touted as a sign of significant progress. This is a major success for the African nation, which less than six months ago was considering suspending elections in the Northeastern part of the country due to the heavy fighting. With the aid of a combined American-British peacekeeping force under Operation Alberta, Nigerian troops have pushed Boko Haram deep into the countryside, where the jihadist group has been forced to resort to “lone-wolf” attacks on villages and army posts. Nigerian officials have stated that while several villages do remain under Boko Haram’s control, it is only a matter of time before the group is forced out of the country altogether. Pictured: Nigerian soldiers standing guard in the town of Diwka The war is not yet won however, as last week's attack on a British Army helicopter proves. On Tuesday, Brigadier General Anthony Melchett confirmed the loss of both pilots and a soldier from 16 Air Assault Brigade in the shootdown, which Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for. Her Majesty's Government issued a statement honoring the soldiers, stating that “the forces of democracy will never stop fighting tyranny” and that the terrorist group’s days were numbered. The British and American forces have largely been in a support role for the fighting soldiers, but fifteen, nine British and six Americans, have lost their lives during Operation Alberta. There is also growing concern about where the scattered Boko Haram fighters will end up, as the borders are little more than lines on a map in most parts of Northern Nigeria, with little to no official presence. The African Union has called for a vote next Thursday to assemble a military task force to help guard the Cameroonian and Chadian borders, though the recent instability in Chad has left some wondering if the country will be willing to allow a foreign military to operate within its borders. The influx of ISIS fighters from Syria and Afghanistan towards Africa is also troubling, though it does not appear that Boko Haram has received these possible reinforcements, which has left analysts wondering where they are going. For the time being, however, Nigeria is relishing in its victories. Restaurants in Abuja and Lagos have begun offering security forces personnel discounts on drinks and meals, while the Nigerian President Ekundayo announced that preparations for a day of celebration were underway in the capital. Many in the West are also hopeful that the retreat of Boko Haram will enable the government to further establish its still-struggling democracy, as well as decrease the commitments they’ve made to the region. 10. Chinese Submarine Crisis Has Region On Edge As It Enters Its Fifth Day Grand Central Times - Dateline September 3rd, 2019 Tensions in the South China Sea spiked again last night after Vietnam refused to return the Yuan Zheng 74 submarine that had run aground just south of a major Vietnamese naval base. Vietnamese President Tiêu Kiến Ðức issued a public statement saying “The People’s Republic of China has once again proven they care not for peace or the rule of law by threatening us to recover the submarine they illegally sent into our waters.” The crisis, which began four days ago, has shown few signs of de-escalation since the submarine was first captured. Pictured: The Yuan Zheng 74 run aground South of Cam Ranh Harbor. Photo Courtesy of the Vietnamese People's Navy. Spotted by patrol boats of the Vietnam People’s Navy on Tuesday just south of Cam Ranh Bay, which houses a significant portion of the Vietnamese fleet, the trapped submarine was at first thought to be one of Vietnam’s Kilo-class submarines that had gotten lost in the stormy weather of the previous night. However as the patrol boats closed in, they were greeted by the sight of Chinese sailors scrambling on the deck followed quickly by a loudspeaker warning them not to approach or they would be fired upon. The patrol boats pulled back, but the Vietnamese quickly deployed several warships to block any escape or rescue attempt and troops were sent to guard the nearby shores as well as look for any members of the crew who had come ashore. With this support, several heavily-armed Vietnamese patrol boats came alongside the stricken vessel, demanding the crew surrender or be fired upon themselves. After a brief standoff, a Chinese officer came out of the ship waving a white flag. As the Vietnamese began boarding the ship, they quickly found that the officer who had surrender the vessel was the second-in-command, with the captain having committed suicide sometime after the boat ran aground. They also soon found a large amount of the ship’s documents had been burned or shredded, and several sensitive systems had been smashed. The crew were equally uncooperative, and are currently being housed in a security facility at the naval base awaiting repatriation according to sources in the Vietnamese Navy. Those sources also claim that evidence has been recovered that proves the Chinese vessel was preparing to deploy commandos to sabotage Vietnamese warships in Cam Ranh Bay. China has denied these allegations and contends that the vessel merely became lost in the bad weather, while also accusing Vietnam of needlessly escalating the situation by illegally seizing a vessel in distress. Conspiracy theories are already circulating on Weibo and other Chinese social media sites that the captain was executed by Vietnamese soldiers to prevent the submarine from leaving. China has also mobilized the South Sea Fleet to a higher level of readiness, with several Chinese warships now patrolling just outside of Vietnamese waters near Cam Ranh. While the US has not taken an official stance on the matter, the 7th Fleet has issued a statement that it will be launching more Freedom of Navigation missions throughout the South China Sea in the coming weeks. Many in Washington view this as the latest in a series of aggressive acts taken by China towards the region, which has been on the rise since the 2016 RIMPAC Incident. The repeated harassment of Filipino vessels by the Chinese Navy has also been a sore point for US-China relations, with some Filipino officials calling for the reactivation of the Subic Bay Naval Base, a former US Navy installation that was closed in 1991. The proposals are receiving support from the Pentagon, who views China’s island building as a serious threat to US forces in the region, and looks to balance these forward bases with American ones.
