So did the gun backfire into the turret compartment? Setting of the extra ammo stored there?

probably or just bad maintenance

Seemed to me like the barrel or the breach were not properly maintained or pressure sealed and the gun's energy was just transferred into the tank. He looked too intact to have taken a shell.
