Following the soviet Operation Bagration during the Summer of 1944 the German Heeresgruppe Mitte lay in ruins. 28 out of its 34 division have been completely destroyed during the intense fighting in Ruthenia and the Soviet armies have gained a foothold in eastern Poland. A desperate defense has forced the German forces to adopt their iconic "Kampfgruppe" tactics where small ad hoc units conduct minor offensives at key locations to disrupt and delay the enemy as much as possible for the smallest possible cost.

With the new StG 44s finally being delivered in large enough numbers these Kampfgruppen are equipped with the latest in german arms manufacturing, gone are the old Bolt action rifles and in are the new "Sturmgewehr". With a 30 round detachable magazine, select fire and an effective range of up to 500 meters the new rifle is equally useful in the narrow confines of a village or dense forrest as they are in the vast open spaces of Eastern Poland.
