Operation Sand Scythe (1974)

(Fictional) Air Combat Operation

Intro

The African Socialist Coalition has performed a coup d'état in Somalia, with the backing of the USSR. The Red Menace now threatens the Arab Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The African Socialist Coalition, alongside USSR's troops performing 'international' duties have secured their boots on the Somalian peninsula and are moving in heavy anti-ship batteries and assorted equipment to fully establish their rule on the horn of Africa. This will severely threaten the Western Bloc and will hinder international trade. The ASC is threatening to fully close the strait and nationalize what are otherwise international waters. President Nixon attempted to negotiate with the Somalian military junta that was established by the ASC, but with no results. They are not willing to give in to the requests of the United States, and now that President Nixon has resigned from his position - President Ford has a more aggressive stance. He has given the ASC 72 hours to cease all military operations on the peninsula, and has ordered the USSR to stop arming up the region.

Situation Briefing

The first operational fighter squadron of F-14 fighter jets is attached to the carrier strike group and will have its baptism by fire during this deployment. The fighter squadron is to perform air policing duties and combat air patrols with intent to neutralize any hostile air threats, and any potential bombers carrying anti-ship missiles. They are to provide friendly deep-strike aircraft with air coverage so that they may strike enemy targets without the risk of being shot down, and aid them with close air support if needed be. Enemy air threats are at a high level, with the potential of a set up SAM network existing on land. Lastly, the F-14s are equipped with experimental AIM-54 Phoenixes that have great range and interception capability, but have never been tested in direct combat.
