The remarks here are from my own thoughts and ramblings that I feel I must express: Ladies and Gentlemen, I write to you with a heavy heart and a weariness that weighs deeply in my mind, and ask of you all to please stay calm and weather this storm of which few know, or believe they know, all of the truths and facts. I ask of you all to think before taking any drastic actions. We all here made this community together, each and everyone of us, whether you were an S-Shop member or just a grunt from back in the formation of the 13th, each and every person is responsible for the foundation of this group and should be proud of such a fact. Through the long nights and early mornings, we all worked, in each our own ways, to try to propel this unit off the ground and into a state that we can call a home for us, and as such I plead to all of you to not give up just yet. I understand everyone is tired, confused, angry, or all of the above, but I must ask, have we done everything we could? Have we tried to fix all of our problems before throwing in the towel to give up? How many attempted to open clear lines of proper communication? I do not side with one group who say they have been wronged, or another that say they were in the right. I side with the unit that I wasted my hours away at to provide every person here an enjoyable time, just as I know others have. Have we wasted our time? I believe only if we have given up, it was been all for naught. The point I am trying to make, is have you who have left, or are leaving, fought completely for what you think is correct? And those who are being held responsible, have you done your best to clarify and make amends? To those of you who feel they have no power or voice, I disagree. We all made this unit together, and together I feel things can be changed if you actively voice your opinions. Are we not all adults here? Can we not sit down and talk things out? Or must we all jump to rash conclusions and make choices we may regret? If there is one thing I know, it is that pettiness gets no one anywhere, so I must once again plead that we try to be adults about the entire situation, sit down, and talk to those that you feel need to be talked to without resorting to childish antics. I'm sorry if I wasted your time, or you disagree with me, however these are feelings I've been having without a way to express them. My final thoughts are as such, please think before acting. That goes to both parties in this situation. We didn't create this unit to tear each other apart or drift apart. We made this unit because we're all friends who just want to play games with each other, and I personally have made friends here for life, as have a majority of people here, and we should never forget that, no matter the cause of dispute. The boat sails on... Regards, Brian Specter

Since we as a unit get caught up in thinking about and dwelling on what we don't like, and what we have problems with, I thought it would be good to switch gears a bit. Posts and comments expressing gratitude for our fellow members and/or the things they do are only ever really put in discharge and retirement posts. So to make a small change from that the point of this thread is the following: Make a post expressing your gratitude for at least one person in this unit and/or the things they do. If you would like to include more than one person or event then feel more than welcome to do so. Further, I challenge every one in the unit to do this, so pass it along to your friends and subordinates. And if you read this at all, take the 3 minutes to make a quick reply thanking someone for something they have done. The only rule is that it must be members of the unit, past or present, and must be an expression of genuine thanks or appreciation. Everyone here has put in many hours of time and work to this unit and it is rarely appreciated. Show some love to one-another. I'll start at the top and work my way down. (I'm quite bad at compliments and gratitude, so forgive me if some of my wording sounds jankey or I repeat phrases or whatever ) To my fellow CS members: @Maj Makowski @Maj Ray @CW4 Whelan @HMCS (FMF) Parker @SSgt McCelvy Thank you all for being the most driven and truth-focused group of individuals I have ever had the pleasure of working with. The argumentative ability of the five of you is fantastic. They way you all constantly search for the right thing and for what is best, even though we often disagree on those points, is what continues to drive this unit to be a better place. I also love how we can continue to work very well with each-other even when we are are sometimes at each-other's throats every other day. I couldn't ask for a better group of people to work besides on CS. Thank you. To my Company Commander: @Maj Makowski Thank you for being an outstanding example of what it means to be a leader. Thank you for leading this unit and putting up with crap that no-one should have to. You are a much stronger man than I; I could not do what you do on a day to day basis. Thank you for the hours and hours of your personal time and energy you dedicate to making the unit a better place. To trying to fix the problems and make it an enjoyable experience for everyone. Thank you for maintaining and striving for a professionalism in this unit that has been sorely lacking for a long time. Even small things like going that extra mile for immersive comments in game go a long way. The unit could not be where it is today, and that is decidedly a good thing, without you. I couldn't ask for a better person to lead us going forward into the future. You are very much appreciated. To my Team Chief: @Sgt DelPercio Thank you for being focused and working hard towards excellence, both in yourself and for the team. You dedicate countless hours of time to be there and have a presence with our guys when I have been unable to. You have taken it upon yourself to embody the professionalism that I have wanted the MSOT to strive towards for a long time. You have stepped into your role and have filled it better than I could have possibly hoped for. You've helped me get back into my role as a Team Leader at a time where I was really starting to fade. I'm in your debt. Also, thanks for hounding me relentlessly about Sniper School. It wouldn't have gotten done without you. Thanks you a ton, and keep up the excellent work. To my Team Ops Chief: @Cpl Wilson Thank you for making yourself an outstanding addition to the HQ element. You have dutifully done the administrative assignments given to you and have demonstrated an excellent prowess in in-game ability in combat and in tactics. I'm very glad to be working alongside you and am excited to get to know you better going forward. To my (Former) Team SARC: @HM2 (FMF) Kakta Thank you for being a fantastic friend and a superb adviser. I've rarely met someone as aware of the reality of situations and able to advise on them, as you. Your insight and suggestions have been invaluable over the time that you've been in the unit. Similar to Del, you have really helped me get back into what I'm doing as a TL and love it again. In Team HQ you stepped up and did more than could be reasonably asked of you, doing administrative work, attending element events, and throwing yourself into the role of wanting to help the MSOT and the individuals in it, as much as you possibly could. You are fantastic Kakta. Good luck with Boot Camp and I hope you're back soon. To my Legion 1 EL: @LCpl Zietara Thank you for being an excellent individual all-around. You have a level of professionalism and charisma with your subordinates, and with your CoC, that I have not witnessed in a long time. Thank you for the energy and time you dedicate to the unit and to your element and MSOT. Legion 1 has made massive strides with you in-charge and you have set us up on a great path going forward. Keep going and keep being awesome. To My Legion 2 EL: @SSgt Edwards Thank you for being a solid beacon of stability and professionalism in the MSOT and in the unit. You have dedicated countless hours to the everyday running of the unit and you have filled your role as an EL exponentially more than required. You have remained in your position for a long time, happily content to keep doing what you are doing, and that attitude has made you one of the best at what you do. You are the epitome of an upstanding, straightforward, and caring man. Thank you for doing what you are doing and for sticking with it. Legion, and the 3d, would not be what it is today without you. To the rest of my team: There's too many of you to list I couldn't ask for a better group of guys to work with. You all have been the most enjoyable group I've had the opportunity to work with since the early days of the 13th and the 506th. Though you all can be rambunctious and unprofessional at times and make me want to pull my hair out , you have all been able to fall in line during official events and have been willing and able to learn. Thank you for listening to me rant about stupid combat basics and whatnot every training. Keep up the great work all of you. To S-1: Thank you for keeping the administrative side of the unit up and running. Those of you (crazy) people who actually enjoy administrative work have my respect. And those of you who don't enjoy it, but keep doing it to keep the unit running have my eternal gratitude. To S-2: Thank you for putting in your time and effort into the deployments. Though we have a long way to go still and people are very frequently critical and ungrateful for all that you do, we could not have a unit without you guys. It can be a fun job, but I'm aware that it is also quite taxing. So thank you for putting in the time and energy, even when people are ungrateful, to keep it going. To S-3: Thank you for taking many many hours out of your week to train the unit through everything from A&S to the FTX cycles. That takes a tremendous amount of time and effort and it is often gone very unnoticed. Thank you for putting in that effort even when it is not all that apparent that the unit cares. To S-4: Thank you for doing the most confusing and difficult job available in the unit. Arma is a pain in the butt and you guys somehow make it work so we can all play this game. You are all outstanding people. Keep it up. To S-5: Thank you for keeping people coming in the door. Marketing and Public Relations are what keep the unit having people to play with. So thank you. To Aviation: @LTC Brueske You guys have a very thankless job; sitting around being bored and watching Netflix during operations. But thank you so much all the same. Our ability to operate in-game would be drastically limited without you all and your endurance, or just sick ability to enjoy doing nothing, is a benefit to the entire unit. Also when you guys blow stuff up it's pretty awesome To @Maj Ray You've been my longest standing friend in the unit. Further, you were the first friend I ever made back in the 506th. I've worked with you for years now and I've never met someone so dedicated. In every position you've held you have inspired those around you and have made that part of the unit a better place. Also, incase you were oblivious to the fact that you have now become and icon and a role model for the entire unit, uh you are one. The unit, and the people in it (especially me) are far better off by your being here. You are one of the most dedicated and caring people I've ever met and I've never seen anyone as able to put up with crap being chucked at his face as you. From your job to your work in the unit you get the short end of the stick and I am sorry. Because if there is one person who deserves to be happy and appreciated for everything you do, its you. Thank you for putting up with my shit the last three years. Thanks for always being there for me. Thank you for being one of the greatest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Keep being awesome. I'll come back and add another reply later because I have to go run some errands and there are plenty of people I have left out who I want to thank. But for now, all of you please follow suite and express your gratitude for at least one other person and what they do in the unit. -Hart

Miro Kuparr Georgetown, Tanoa 27th March 2018 Hey China, Exit Stage Left For the first time since World War II, Tanoans experienced the ruinous and malignant nature of conflict. 2016 saw a joint military exercise descend into a short war as China instigated a fight with its participants, namely the United States -- an unprecedented and unexpected move with the intent of seizing Tanoa for themselves. If not for the United States, the Horizon Islands would be in the hands of a malevolent and malicious entity, yet China has decided to repay such devastation with benign intent; the reconstruction of our roads, our bridges, our railways, and more according to this article by the Grand Central Times. It is time for us to rebuild, and it is time for China to leave. China has opened a wound that is not easily mended by rebuilding our home. In fact, it opens the wound further. While some may find this act in good faith, many do not. This is a blatant attempt by the Chinese government to preserve its unequivocally outstanding image and prove to the rest of the world that their intentions were to never cause chaos. They have shattered our trust and they most certainly do not belong in the country. Would a bully who inflicted damages to one’s body be responsible for providing the casts and medicine? No. The Horizon Islands are by no means economically prosperous, and by no means does it have the same amount of resources other nations might, but what we do have is a population willing to labor for the sake of the country. The United States has pledged a significant amount of money in order to assist in the rebuilding process, and with that in mind, the employment of natives would only bolster the economy and more importantly the morale of those being employed. We need not the help of our enemy, but the sweat and blood of our people making an effort to change. Consider for a moment why China has displayed a profound interest in Tanoa and the Horizon Islands as a whole. The islands are home to several mines that contain rare earth metals that are not frequently found in other places. These metals have various applications, but here are some of the more utilized: Scandium - aerospace frameworks, high-intensity lighting, and global telecommunication equipment Gadolinium - used in magnets, computers, and specialty optics Yttrium, Terbium, and Europium - used in computer screens and other devices with visual displays. Each of the elements listed can be found in the Horizon Islands, especially on Tanoa. Each of the elements listed has a military application. Why else would this superpower return after being bested by the United States if not to exploit the mines covertly? While this may seem speculative and may seem like a conspiracy, it is the only logical conclusion one can come to. If China has returned with the intent of using the mines, then it is indisputably time for China to leave. Tanoa does not need their aid and it does not need to remain vigilant to ensure that this entity is not siphoning the resources the islands desperately need to resuscitate the economy. China has dismantled this country enough as it is -- the door is open, and it is ready to hit them on the way out. This article is a work of fiction, intended to support the storyline of the 3d MRB Arma 3 realism unit.

First let me start this off by saying I'm making this post not as a member of CS, not as a Team leader, not as Capt Hart. Just as someone who has been a member of the same community for 3 years, held the same position, and seen the same patterns and types of people come and go through that time. Second: any discussion had in this thread must be kept professional and civil. Any deviations from that will inevitably result in this thread being locked and or deleted. Third: This is for discussion and debate. You must be able to consider other individuals points of view and allow yourself to be open enough that you can be convinced to the other side. If you are going to be involved in this thread but are not willing to allow your own mind to be changed then please don't involve yourself. This is intended to be a constructive debate and discussion of thoughts and ideas. If you just want to use this as an excuse to start more drama, don't, and kindly screw off. I've laid these out in points that talk about a single concept. If you are going to respond to this thread, please do me a favor and actually read all of it and consider what I've said. Point 1: You are a grown up. Act like it. Currently in this unit we have 76 active members. At previous times in our history, and in our other variants of the unit, we have had upwards of 150. This means there will be A LOT of conflicting view points and not everyone can always be right or get their way. That idea is something taught in elementary school but for some reason because it's the internet, and people loose touch with the reality of the very real people who are also on said internet, all maturity and adult behavior goes out the window. If you had a job where you disliked the boss or the decisions they were making, the VAST majority of the civilized population would either try to change the behavior through the appropriate and professional channels, or they would quit the job and go somewhere else. But this being an online Arma 3 unit, for some reason that ability and behavior goes out the window. The incidents with Brawler, Drumheller, Harrison, and so on, prove my point. Rather than starting a coup or shutting down servers or causing a mass exodus, try to fix the problem maturely or quietly leave and go to another place you would rather be at. Point 2: You are not always right As previously stated, you WILL NOT get your way 100% of the time. Even in CS, though we present a united front after we have decided on a course of action, the amount of conflict and argument and opposing view points that are presented means that in about 40% of decisions we make at least half of CS has to come to some sort of compromise. On about another 40% just under half of CS (this is why we have a majority vote for things) doesn't get their way at all. There's only about 20% of the decisions we make where we all agree on what should happen. And that's just with 5 BLOODY PEOPLE. With 76? No wonder you didn't get your way and someone else did, or vice versa. That's why modern civilization has developed more appropriate means of expressing dislike and working for something better. Because throwing a hissy fit and causing drama and problems for the other 70 people in the unit only serves to make yourself feel better by putting everyone else down. 5 year old children do that on the playground. High-school bullies do that. You are all grown adults. Act like it and find ways of fixing the problems, or expressing your dislike for a situation, in a way that benefits the other 75 people in the unit rather than just your or your 5 friends. Point 3: If you have a problem, do something constructive about it As stated in point 2, if you just cause drama or bitch about stuff to make you feel like you have a bigger penis at the expense of everyone else, you are cancerous by definition and should stop or get out. We have a set CoC and structure so that complaints and suggestions can be sent up in a Mature and Adult manner and can be addressed as such. Being a dick in the meme thread or just bitching to those sympathetic with your bias helps no one but yourself and your similarly useless and parasitic cohorts. If you want change to actually happen or would like to see things appropriately addressed, send it up and follow up on it. Yes the CoC is imperfect. Yes things are neglected and forgotten about from time to time. Again we are only human. But it's never intentional. Its never to slight you or to make ourselves feel like our penises are bigger. And for anyone in any leadership capacity who does that intentionally or uses it as a penis enlargement pill, you should not be where you are and should resign. As for everyone else, if you find yourself guilty of pointlessly bitching or festering drama, please apply my earlier advice: Stop it, or get out. Send stuff up and be constructive about it. Try to help everyone and not just yourself. Point 4: Command Staff isn't the enemy, or the problem. The reason CS exists is because of my last sentence in the above paragraph. Due to people's natural inclination to be self serving and dictatorial, and that paired with the absurd level of dickish-ness that is rampant on the internet, having just one person in-charge of 76 people is likely going to result, eventually, in biased and self serving decisions. I have only to point at Drumheller to explain this. His reasoning for taking over the unit, for kicking 100 of us out of the unit, was because "It's my unit. I founded it and it was going in a direction I didn't like. So I decided to do something about it." He took control and made decisions that were self-serving and for his benefit. Not the majority of the unit. And solely because he was removed from power. The new leadership wasn't making dramatic changes to anything and the unit was functioning fine. The ONLY thing that changed was he was out of power. So he destroyed 75% of his unit because of the self-serving nature of mankind. CS has 5 voting members so we can check our own bias and stupidity. No one person is perfect enough to be unbiased when their precious ego is at stake and no one person is as community minded and non-self serving to make decisions that are always more beneficial to everyone else. There have been many times that I have been blinded by my own bias or self-serving nature and I could not see what was best for everyone else. And every. single. other. member of CS has had the same happen to them. We exist, as we are, so that we can try, and fail at times as we are only human, to make decisions that benefit the majority of the unit and uphold what we were founded to be, rather than just ourselves or a small group. We are not trying to make you hate us. We are not trying to hurt you or make your experience here a bad one. We are trying to make an enjoyable community of, and for, people who all want to play Arma the way we do, and the way it is defined officially by our definition of realism. It's easy to let CS bear the brunt of your hate and unhappiness towards everything in the unit. I did it plenty before I found myself in that position. But while its easy to do that, its better for us, you, and the rest of the unit, if you support CS and send up suggestions and complaints. Because as I said we are only human. We can and will make mistakes. Send up your thoughts and we will do our damned best to evaluate it as unbiased as possible and continue to make decisions that benefit the unit as a whole. Be constructive towards the entire unit, and don't make your dick bigger by putting down those in-charge of helping everyone. Point 5: Structure The idea of a structured MILLSIM unit is to provide a location where gameplay and scenarios are realistic and challenging. Those who join units like this, for that kind of experience, find fun in the successful execution of a difficult mission and in the professional mindset and semi-realistic methods we accomplish that in. If your idea of "Fun" in arma is just doing what you want, there are plenty of places out there that cater to that. This isn't one of them. In professional basketball, or soccer, or baseball or literally any other sport, the fun enjoyed there comes from winning. From being the best. From doing something incredibly difficult and coming out on top. Not just playing the game for the sake of playing it. If you want to just play basketball, just to play it, and don't find your fun in being the best or winning or anything, that's what games of pickup basketball are for. And if you want to win national or international tournaments and succeed against overwhelming odds, that's what professional basketball is for. Fun ops, and other non-structured units or events are for those of you who just want to play the game and do what you want. The pickup game of basketball. This unit, the 15th, the 506th and many more are for those who want to actually get good at what you are doing and be set in that mindset and practice it. The professional basketball. If you are someone who wants to just play some pickup basketball in arma, go join a unit that caters to that. No one should fault you for doing that. But if you are someone who legitimately does want to play some professional basketball, then suck it up and put in the work to get good. And branching off somewhat from the above topic to touch on this FTX cycle: Part of our fun, as stated above, is to actually get good. Not have missions catered to us, but to actually be good at what we do. That takes effort and time and work and dedication. And it takes not just doing what you want or what you have been doing. Change is difficult, and for us to change there has to be some motivation or some pressure to make that happen. Sure the grades seem a little high-schooley. So what? People complain about FTX cycles anyway, and they always have, just because its an FTX. So if you're someone who just complains at FTX cycles, why not give this change, and something that hasn't been tried before, a shot before you hate it completely. If you are not, then look at this as a great opportunity. We get to play a friendly game of our figurative basketball against our team-mates to see who is the the best and to push ourselves to become better. Friendly competition goes a long way on driving people to get better, and since getting better is where we get our fun from, we should relish the opportunity to push ourselves and get better. Try it before you knock it folks. And do your best to make it a positive experience for everyone. Point 6: Growing Pains The 3rd has existed in its current form for only about a year an a half of that. Through that time, only about 3/4 of a year ago, we had a massive uprooting of our leadership and structure. CS was completely replaced, Battalion was replaced, company was replaced, bravo company was dissolved, and many of the long-standing members in their previous positions were called upon to fill the MASSIVE vacancies that drama-filled event caused. I.e. Maj Ray, Maj Makowski, MSgt Wolfe, LTC Brueske, and so on. Since then, company leadership has changed hands three times, battalion has been opened and closed twice and has changed leadership twice, the S-shops have been vacated and filled at least two times each, with the somewhat exception of S-1, and S-shop leadership has changed hands too many times to count. On top of all of that, the deployment and story-building department was moved from S-3 to S-2, and the leadership of S-2 has changed at least two times now. The battle captains and zeus operators have been cycled through a few times, and to boot the FTX cycles have now been handed back over to S-3/Company. So to say that we have been through some change is a COLOSSAL understatement. We have had two deployments, one of which was a monumental failure (Jungle Hunter) largely due to the leadership not having adapted to the special forces mindset yet, and the fact that insta-death was turned on. The latest one, actually went reasonably well since we weren't chasing after other captured MSOTs or the entire task force being KIA every mission. Say what you will about our last deployment and the faults it may have had, but at the end of the day it was a MASSIVE step up from the last one we had. So my point is this: We have not existed long enough, and with stable leadership long enough, to have fleshed out or even come close to perfecting what we are doing and how we are doing it. So be patient. It's going to be painful as we will have to learn from our mistakes, but if everyone in the unit was constructive and helpful and willing to work hard, we would get through these growing pains and get ourselves figured out in the fraction of the time it would take if things stay where they are now. Where currently people just complain for the sake of complaining and force good people out of their positions due to burnout and others not being willing to lend a hand or be helpful. You don't have to be in CS or an S-Shop leader or even in a leadership position to make positive change for the unit. Lend a hand and help out wherever you can. Be patient and constructive and help your friends and subordinates to do the same. Point 7: This is an escape for us. Don't screw it up. All 76 of us have real lives outside of this, with real problems and real shit that we have to go through. I remember last year when the 15th held a memorial service for one of their members who committed suicide. I remember when King died, a good friend of many of the older members of the unit. I remember when a close friend of mine in the unit went through an incredibly depressed and suicidal phase. And even now if you look at the LOAs thread and see Parker who had a close friend commit suicide. My girlfriend who nearly has done so on multiple occasions, Kardnal and whatever it is he is dealing with. And that's just those who feel comfortable, IN THE LAST MONTH, publicly posting about the shit they are having to go through. That doesn't even come close to the number of people IN THIS UNIT who go through hell every day and come here for an escape from the hell they live in. People come here to enjoy their time in a structured community and to escape whatever horrendous thing it is that life has put on their plate. If you come into communities like this and make our time here, our breaks from reality, our ability to escape the shitstorm of life that we normally have to deal with, into time that is more stressful more dramatic and more painful than our every-day lives, you can go to hell. Go fuck yourself, that's not what anyone here has bargained for. There's my novel/rant. Rather than sitting on all this and letting it fester, I felt it was better to put this out where you all can see it. Feel free to comment and debate and respond to all this, as I stated above. But if there is one thing I wish everyone could take out of this; its Point 7. All this is where the idea of "I just want to play arma with my friends" comes from. Please don't put those people down and make their lives harder than they already are. Thanks for reading. - Hart

Arlo Alberton The Globe and Anchor 4/27/18 The Violence of the Horizon Islands Horizon Islands (G&A) -- The United States' assistance in the Horizon Islands was once welcome and once a strong indication that the people would have a powerful ally as their sworn protector. The U.S has taken several different initiatives across many of the western islands to drive away the pirates that have plagued the land in recent months. However, it would appear that the United States is improperly identifying their enemies and are now engaging local civilians and their properties. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” says Arnold Puteer, a resident of Qua-Que. “They destroyed that business, and almost destroyed the ruins. How does dropping a bomb on a business going to rid of the bandits?” Instagram post from user “bigkochbread” on the recent air strike on a civilian structure. This wouldn’t be the first instance of collateral damage, however. Several different residents have reported of being placed in immediate danger when the United States was in the area. “They are like magnets. They just attract the bandits,” a resident commented. “If I wanted them to come to my house, I would leave all of my belongings outside my door!” United States leaders are under heavy scrutiny since the allegations surfaced. Citizens across the Islands are demanding an explanation as to why structures are destroyed, but no clarification has been released by any officials. Local leaders have offered a statement, stating the attacks “were not done with intentions to maim or kill, but to root out the bandit’s from any area they may be occupying”. No statements on the actual contents of this establishment or the reasoning to destroy it has been released. “My children are afraid. My wife is afraid. I am afraid. I do not feel safe with [the United States] having the ability to destroy my home and my work. I make little as is -- and they have ruined a good business,” says Puteer. Following the attacks from the United States are reports of increased violence from opposing forces. The bandits occupying the various regions of the islands, with reports of extreme inhuman actions affecting the local populace. While not shown, mass killings and public displays of execution have been photographed by locals and military officials. The local bandits are also assuming the tactics of insurgents -- being disguised as common civilians and ambushing local police forces as they respond to emergency calls. This information is coming from the same region, causing panic and instilling more fear among the population. “What we’ve seen is an inexplicable, horrendous act of cruelty. There is no doubt in my mind that these awful men will be brought to justice,” says local politician James White. What measures the local governments will take to ensure the safety of the islands is unknown. Any attempt to reach out for comments has failed. At this time, the military presence of the United States, Australia, and China are the sole entities quarantining the bandit infection. Chinese Government Looks to Make Up for Tanoan Transgressions In the wake of the unprovoked attack by rogue Chinese General Shoushan on U.S. and Australian forces during 2016’s Rim of the Pacific military exercises, or RIMPAC, it now seems like the Chinese are doing their best to save face. The Chinese military, the People’s Liberation Army (or PLA), deployed once again to the Horizon Islands earlier this month. With the approval of the U.N. and under strict U.S. supervision, the PLA deployed a small peacekeeping force to the island of Tanoa, where most of the fighting between U.S. Marines and rogue Chinese troops was concentrated. Under the command of Major General Zheng Shian, Chinese Engineers are to aid local authorities in restoring vital infrastructure such as roads, bridges, railways, and communication facilities damaged during the 2016 RIMPAC incident. Abroad, critics of the Chinese ruling Communist party openly wonder about the party’s intentions by sending General Shian to Tanoa. Previously stationed in garrisons in Hong Kong and Macau, the General is a known moderate, and while not an open critic of the Party, he has never been as enthusiastic as Party loyalists. During a recent military crackdown on protests in Hong Kong, Shian’s troops were slow to mobilize and much less aggressive than troops from mainland China. U.S. and U.N. officials state that the Chinese force is there to provide engineering competence to civilian infrastructure and assist in keeping the peace. It is a force with very limited combat capabilities and is intended to act as a deterrent to the recent increase in bandit and pirate activity on Tanoa and the surrounding islands. U.S. special operations forces in the islands are meanwhile committed to stamping out the threat posed by these bandits while the Chinese troops will take menial patrol and guard duty off their shoulders. Chinese military engineers make repairs to a railway crossing damaged during the RIMPAC incident. Questions as to the true nature of China’s reasoning for being in Tanoa once again continue to fly. It remains to be seen whether General Shousan was truly rogue, or the party threw him under the bus. These questions and undoubtedly many more will only be answered with time. China’s bullish ambitions in the South Pacific and further overseas may have been tempered momentarily by General’s Shousan’s war, but it is clear that China intends to continue the path from regional to global power.
